Walmart Tents and Camping Equipment

Walmart Tents & Camping Gear

Walmart Tents

What are Walmart Tents

Walmart tents are sold under the brand name Ozark Trail tents and can only be found at Walmart stores or on their website. Additionally, there is a whole line of Walmart camping gear under the name Ozark Trail.

It should be noted that Ozark Trail tents are now being sold on amazon now as well.

Due to the fact that Walmart tents can be purchased for an extremely low cost these camping tents have really become popular and in response there are more sizes and designs of Walmart camping tents to choose from these days.

The question is, how good are their tents. If they can’t stand up to a season of camping without ripping, breaking tent poles or just simply leaking then are they really a value?

How Good are Walmart Tents

Walmart Tent

Is a Walmart tent any good?

The truth is that they are not the best camping tents made, that is for sure. However what makes these tents worthwhile is the fact that they can be purchased so inexpensively.
The Most expensive Walmart tent is only going to cost you roughly $350 and this is for a very large  3 room family camping tent. Walmart’s least expensive tent is only going to cost you around $35.

Although not the best camping tents made, they are really not bad for the price. Additionally, they make the perfect tent for someone who only goes camping once in a great while or for someone who has never been camping and just wants to give it a try to see how they enjoy it.

Why spend more money on a tent just to find out you do not like camping.

Problems with Walmart Tents

The main problem with any of the Walmart tents seems to be the fact that the tent poles tend to break fairly easy. Of course this is not the only brand of camping tent to have this problem which is why you can find so many replacement tent pole kits to fit just about any make and model of tent.

This is very fortunate because you will find that there are no replacement parts being sold by or for Walmart’s camping tents. This is another issue with this brand and one that many people complain about. However, as mentioned, you can find generic/universal replacement tent poles as well as other items such as rainflys that will fit most models of almost any brand of tent.

Of course this might not be to convenient if you are out camping miles from nowhere when the tent poles break, this is why we suggest that you carry an extra set of poles just in case.

My Experience with Walmart Tents

Walmart Camping Tents

Personally, I have owned a Walmart tent for several years now and have not had any problems. I have one of the smaller Ozark Trail tents which I can set up on my own. I know about the issue with the tent poles so take great care when setting up my tent.
I typically use it 4-5 times a year and usually for 3-4 days at a time. Additionally our kids love to set it up in our backyard and camp out on their own.
$35 for a summer of fun for my kids is well worth it even if the whole thing fell apart by the end of the summer.
I have  also recently acquired a larger model as well but have only used it twice, however I have had no issues with it so far.
Of course if you are into more extreme camping with more severe weather conditions then Walmart tents are probably not what you are looking for. I am typically camping in mild to warm conditions with maybe a little rain now and then and the tent always suits me just fine. Most Ozark Trail tents come with a rainfly to help keep the tent dry inside and they all have a mud mat to help keep the inside of the tent clean.
Additionally Walmart tents have standard features such as side pockets and areas that allow for ventilation. They also come in a very handy duffel bag carrying case for use when transporting or storing your tent.

Are Walmart Tents Right for You

So, if you are a first time camper just wanting to give camping a try or someone who does not do a lot of camping then Walmart tents would be a great choice for you. If you have children who may want to do some backyard camping then a Walmart tent would be great for you.
However if you do a lot of camping every year or like to camp in more extreme conditions then Walmart tents would probably not be the best camping tent to choose.

I like Ozark Trail tents because of the price and they are a decent tent for mild camping. I however hate the fact that Walmart does nothing when it comes to replacement parts or customer service for their brand of tents.

In essence they are helping to keep us as a throw away and consumerist society where products are purchased (not meaning evergreen products such as toothpaste or toilet paper) and you only get a few uses out of them and need to make a new purchase to replace it.

I am very sorry for the hassle you had to go through and hope your next tent purchase goes better for you.

      Best Regards,
      James

Amazon would be your best bet for finding any type of parts you might need. Ozark Trail does not make any replacement parts unfortunately.

      Hi Arika,

As you may not have noticed, we are not the manufacturer or retailer of Walmart’s brand of camping gear, Ozark Trail. However, I would love to help you so here is a link for a set of poles that should work for you. Make sure to verify the size of the poles you have with the ones you look at. Tent Poles

We bought an Ozark Trail 10 x14 instant tent last year to use as a temporary sorting facility. (Suddenly had lots of ‘stuff’ to deal with) The driving factor for the purchase was cost, but the tent has seriously outperformed expectations.

We set it up in our Central Texas driveway (gravel) in late summer and it stayed there for just over three months. Those also happened to be three of the wettest months on record here. We would often have rainwater draining off the higher portions of our property and running right under the tent on the way to the pond.

We did discard the flimsy wire stakes and replaced them with more robust nail-type stakes, but because of it’s location we did not use the guy lines from the rain-fly. Though we had several significant storms blow through the tent stayed put just fine.

We didn’t sleep in it, but the tent had a lot of traffic going in and out as we worked through sorting the stuff and getting it boxed up and distributed. The window, and especially the door zippers got quite a workout during that time and never gave us any trouble. Despite all the rain the interior stayed dry and fresh due to the ventilation built into the tent. Even with all the rain the only water we had inside was what we tracked in, The plasticized bottom seems a little light-weight and I wasn’t sure how it would hold up on the gravel, but we never had any punctures or tears. (We did lay rugs down over the high-traffic areas.)

When we finished with it, brushed it off and swept it out, the tent still looked as good as the day we put it up. What with the brushing and sweeping as we went, it actually took longer to take the tent down than it did putting it up but it easily fit back into the bag it came in.

We just dragged the tent down from the loft and put it back up for another round of sorting stuff (I put it up by myself in 15 or so minutes and never felt like I was going to break a pole.) and I can still find no signs of wear.

All said and done, it has been remarkable value for the price.

I am really glad to hear that your Ozark tent performed so well for you. I think this brand often gets a bad rap but in my experience of owning two Ozark Trail tents for the past 5 years is that for the price you can’t beat them. Just like all products some just come out a lemon, the two tents I own have not had one problem since owning them.

I checked out your blog, I love it, you are leading a very cool lifestyle.

Sorry to say that Walmart does not make or sell replacement parts for their camping tents. Your best would be to search amazon and find a universal or generic rainfly that is designed for a tent that is your size and shape.

      Good Luck & Happy Camping

      Hi Alice,

Unfortunately they do not make replacement tent poles for Ozark Trail tents. However you can easily find replacement poles that should fit your tent here. Make sure to check you pole length and diameter before making a purchase. Hopefully you can find what you need and get in a little camping this summer.

      Good Luck and Happy Camping,
      James

      Hi Gerardo,

We are not the official retailer of Ozark Trail tents and we do not supply replacement parts. You can search on Amazon for some replacement parts as Walmart, the company that makes Ozark Trail camping equipment, doesn’t manufacture or sell replacement parts.

      Best of Luck,
