Ozark Trail Tents and Camping Gear Home      Choosing A Dome Tent

Choosing The Best Dome Tent for Your Needs

When it comes to purchasing the correct style and type of tent, there are several important factors that should be taken into consideration. For instance, it will be helpful for you to know the number of people that will be using the camping tents, how and where the camping tents will be used, and of course, the price tag. This concept applies to all tent styles including the popular dome tents.

Camping Enthusiasts of all ages agree that the dome tent is one of the most popular and functional tent styles that are manufactured today. These types of tents are available in a wide range of designs, shapes, and sizes. For instance, some may be the regular dome shape while others may be made up of several domes. Regardless of the amount of domes that are used, all dome camping tents use a geometrical design in their poles to hold up the weight of the tent.
The over all sturdiness of a dome camping tent depends on the structural reliability of the fabric, poles, ropes, and pegs combined. Coleman Camping tents and Ozark trail tents are both examples of high quality structured tents that can be used in a variety of weather conditions.

In general, the poles for dome tents are made of flexible materials, such as carbon fiber. This material overlaps each other to form and equal or almost equal geometric shape.  This structure is a determining factor in how the floor is shaped as well as the tent itself.
For instance, a dome tent that is used as a camping tent with three poles would have a hexagonal shaped floor while a camping tent with four poles would have an octagonal shaped floor. Consequently, this design method facilitates the dome tent to be strong and self-supporting. Under normal circumstances, no stakes or lines are required.

Before you rush out and purchase a dome tent, or any other type of camping tents, keep in mind the season of the year that you will be using it, how easy it is to set up, and how well it will protect you from bad weather.

Main advantages of dome tents include:

1. Dome tents have a large number of corners; they can resist wind and all types of precipitation effectively. Coleman tents are a great example for people that are avid backpackers and canoeists.

2. The corners of a dome tent cannot be used for sleeping, but they can provide extra storage for gears and equipment.

3. As a general rule, dome tents are much lighter in weight than the equivalent sized frame tent.

4. Dome tents provide a greater amount of head room that a conventional ridge tent does.

5. Dome tents can be easily set up and dismantled.

The fabric used for the body of the dome tent is typically made of nylon, and the average weight is approximately two and one-half to seven and one-half pounds. The Rain Fly is more often than not UV-resistant and can be used as a tarp or its own tent when basic, ultra-light shelter is desired. Dome tents can cost from $70 to $600, and may also come with porch extensions, as well as larger sizes that can accommodate up to ten people.

Dome tents can be classified under 3-season type of tents – those that work well for all but the harshest cold weather condition. However, dome tents also do have a few disadvantages:

Coleman dome tents can be used in all seasons except for the harshest cold weather conditions. Conversely, there are a few disadvantages to point out. But you will notice that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

1. Ventilation can be limited due to the geometric design of the dome tent.

2. The space inside the dome tent is not the most usable.

3. Moisture tends to gather at the top of the dome.

These shortcomings may create some problems when using a dome tent but it is still the number one choice for most backpackers, mountaineers, campers, and hikers etc.
